Takrarishta is poly-herbal acidic fermented preparation from gau dugdha and is mentioned in Charak Samhita. It contains Gau Takra (buttermilk which is prepared from curd of cow’s milk), Amla, Harda, Marich, Ajwain, and PAnchlavan (Saindhava namak, Sauvarcala namak, Bida namak, Audbhida namak and Samudra namak). This formulation is useful in piles, intestinal parasites, IBS, loose motions, other digestive problems and for weight loss.
Takrarishta has antibacterial, antimicrobial, grahi (absorbing), digestive and carminative properties. It can be used in pathological condition where antibiotics are required but cannot be given such as during infancy and pregnancy. It is safe and effective preparation.

Key Ingredients of Takrarishta

6 kg of Gou Takra (75% curd and 25% water), 144 gms each of Amla (Emblica officinalis), Harad (Terminalia chebula), Marich (Piper nigrum), Ajowan (Carum copticum), 48 grams each of Sauvarcala namak, Saindhava namak, Bida namak, Audbhida namak and Samudra namak

Preparation of Takrarishta

For preparing Takrarishta, Gau Dugdha or Cow’s milk is boiled and cooled. Starter culture of curd is added for making curd. Takra is prepared by mixing curd and water in 3:1 proportion. Five salts and coarse herbs are also added (1:3 proportion) and allowed to react for four days. The container is kept in a dark place at with lid covered with muslin cloth. When preparation gets ready, it is filtered through muslin cloth and stored in amber coloured bottles.
